Biography
Anna Petersen
I have been exposed to art all of my life. Growing up I was surrounded by all different forms of it. My mother has been a cellist in the Cincinnati Symphony for over thirty years. My father graduated from Washington University with a degree in sculpture but moved on to the culinary arts, opening the Petersen's Restaurants in three locations. My eldest brother graduated from Ohio University with a degree in Spanish, and is now teaching the language at the Waldorf School. My second eldest brother is a graduate of the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati with a degree jazz and classical piano. All three of us play steel drums, but we have yet to play together.
As for me, I've dabbled in the different art forms as well. When I was young, I took ballet classes for quite a few years. I tried several different instruments but only stuck with the steel pan. My second choice for schools was the Midwest Culinary Institute, for baking and pastry arts. But overall, I had decided that visual arts is where my talents lie, and so my reason for being here at the Columbus College of Art and Design.
Throughout my career at Walnut Hills High School, I took as many art classes as I could. Starting with Junior Art in eigth grade, I moved on to Textiles, Photography, Beginning Design, Advanced Design, and Studio Art AP. Outside of school I took a class in painting and a couple years of ceramics. I created my own jewelry using wire and various marbles and stones as a hobby and spent much of my free time writing poetry and short stories. During the summer of 2008, I was accepted to participate in Art Works, a Cincinnati based youth program incorporating all art forms as a means to better the city. Specifically, I helped paint one of many murals around our city. It's a unique and fun way to brighten our neighborhoods and earn a little cash.
Though I enjoy working in many ways, I feel as if my passion lies in Fine Arts. I have always had an interest in constructing with my hands, whether it be constructing sculptures from disassembled bicycles or molding soup bowls from wet clay. I just love making things, and getting messy while doing it. Aside from art, I've always had an interest in people; who they are individually, what makes them do what they do. Whatever direction I go in, I plan to further my education in psychology to help me better understand myself and others and to better understand the art that I create. I will do whatever it takes to better myself as an artist, as a person, and as an avid addict of life.
